5084 at Martinsburg, 1950

Engine 5084 was a P-1d, built 1911 as P-1b, later converted to P-1aa, then P-1d; Scrapped 3/1954.

On Mail and Express train.   With no passengers on the platform, shadows indicating late in the day, and running on one of the inner tracks, it does not appear to be stopping, so most likely Train 2nd/8.

Shown in the background are some of the Martinsburg shop facilities.  By this time, the facilities were, left to right: the bridge reclamation and weld area; a storehouse; the West Roundhouse, which housed the National bureau of Standards; and the forge and stamping shop for the trackwork fabrication shop located in the (unseen) East Roundhouse.

The structure on the left is the porch for the second floor of the station.  The brick platform has several baggage carts.

The other engine shown is 5008, a P-1c with a predecessor to the USRA style tender, probably used in protect service for through passenger trains or in commuter service for trains to Washington, DC.
