Welcome to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad
The Society is dedicated to the preservation of and education about the history of America’s first Common Carrier Railroad, the Baltimore & Ohio. The Society has members all over the world across a variety of railroad interests from modeling to research to preservation
The Society maintains a large archive of documentation from the Office of the Vice President of Operations and Engineering from the B&O Railroad. We are also the custodians of numerous photographs and other items of research. We are constantly publishing our findings through our Company Store. Our Archives area is open one weekend a month to facilitate members who which to pursue their B&O research efforts. The Society also publishes a quarterly journal, The Sentinel and a bi-monthly on-line magazine, The B&O Modeler. Each year, the Society also holds a major conference and two mini-conferences The B&O Railroad Historical Society is always welcoming new members. We have two levels of individual membership—Regular and Sustaining. Regular members get a year of our quarterly journal, The Sentinel. Sustaining members get a year of our journal and our Color Calendar. All levels of individual members enjoy discounts with our Company Store and the ability to attend our mini-conferences and our annual Convention. Become a member or check out the Membership link on the left for more information. There is also a web based membership application available We invite you to read about our Society history as well as a brief history of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Read about our history and a brief history of the B&O or investigate the History link on the right. We would also suggest that you look at the wealth of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad historical information that is available through the many articles written for our quarterly magazine, The Sentinel. These magazines contain a wealth of information about the B&O and the railroad's early beginnings. The Company Store still has a few back issues available for sale to the public, some going back to 1990. There are also two CD's available for sale that contain copies of virtually every Sentinel magazine printed since inception of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Historical Society The Society is also active in the development of new models that accurately represent an item of equipment that ran on the B&O during its existence. If anyone, whether it be a commercial entity or an individual with an idea that has a clear path to production, with recommended vendor, of a B&O product, please contact our Chairman, B&O Modeling Committee. You could also contact our VP/Finance who will coordinate with the B&O Modeling Committee. Please see our Contacts button in the Navigation Bar above for a listing of Society contacts, including the Chairman, B&O Modeling Committee as well as the VP/Finance |

As a convenience to members who have asked for a faster delivery or would like to begin maintaining their magazines in electronic format on their computer or tablet, The Sentinel magazine is now available in an electronic format. If you would like to consider the eSentinel instead of receiving a hard copy through the mail, check out the SENTINEL link in the Navigation Bar at the top of this page for details, or click here for further information on the eSentinel The Sentinel. The 1st Quarter, 2012 edition of The Sentinel has been published in both an electronic version and a hard copy to be sent to members through the mail. This edition is 36 pages and contains an artilce on B&O's Washington, Indiana, Shops; Narrowing a Gap at Youngstown, Ohio; The B&O's Versatile O-63 Gondola, plus several other articles of interest. Here is a low resolution copy of the first 12 pages from the eSentinel edition of this issue. From time to time, while performing research for an article for our quarterly magazine, The Sentinel, or other purlications, useful but little known information is found that while not used in the document to be published, is of significant value that it should be shared with those interested in the history of the B&O. Information of this type can be referenced through our History link on the Navigation Bar at the top of this page. Presently, new research on railcar production and refurbishment at the B&O's Washington, Ind. shops after 1940 is now available for review. In the case of this data, it should be reviewed in conjunction with an article on the history of the shops that is to appear in the 1st Quarter, 2012 edition, or The Sentinel. The table is too large to be included in the article. Thus, the data is provided through our History link Time is quickly passing, which means we are getting closer to the March 23-25 RPM Valley Forge 2012! If you are interested in having table space at next year's meet don't delay sending in your registration and reservation form. The vendors room is nearly half filled as of today with new forms coming in regularly. The vendors room is one of the highlights of the meet. Go to www.phillynmra.org and follow the links to RPM Valley Forge where you can find the latest information and a registration form. While the B&O Railroad Historical Society often supports this excellent meeting, it is not sponsored by the Society and is noted here as a special interest item only The B&O Railroad Historical Society is proud to announce that we have now expanded access to our archival collections. We have put the first of our archival catalogs on-line. This catalog provides a listing of all scanned large format documents available currently from the society archives. We have hard-copies available for $5 a sheet with $6 shipping and handling. Please allow for 4 to 6 weeks for your order to be fulfilled. As more documents are scanned our list of available documents will continue to grow.
